A Luncheon Is Not Just For Eating

History

The word ”History” reminds us that this is an opportunity to take a look back to see what has been accomplished as you journey through life.  Most of us don’t realize that we are making history with every word we speak and every action we take.  Sometimes that history will be remembered and sometimes it may be forgotten.  That’s why it is good to take the time to reflect back on where you have been so you can better determine what you need to do for the future.  It is also a good thing to write down accomplishments as they happen so they won’t be forgotten or lost.  This is my effort to keep a record of the history of the Gospel Songwriters Music Workshop as we learn, grow and expand our efforts.  Last year we focused on the implementation of the Gospel Songwriters Workshop Choir, but this year we want to focus on the Up Close and Personal Luncheon.

The first luncheon was held in 2003 and our special guest was Bishop Leonard Scott of Tyscot Records.  Bishop Scott and his wife Christine were a joy to have as our special guests.  Bishop Scott made everyone feel comfortable with his friendly manner and made it easy for everyone to participate.  Not only did we enjoy a great meal, but we enjoyed wonderful words of encouragement as he spoke.  The year 2004 was a little bit more of a challenge, but Pastor William Becton knew how to make everyone feel at ease even though destruction from Hurricane Ivan was all around.  Although we had to do a lot of improvising, God blessed us to make that luncheon one of the best we have ever had.  The food was outstanding and the camaraderie was exceptional.

One year later we were still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Ivan, but Brother Troy Sneed of Emtro Gospel Records blessed us with his presence in 2005 and 2006 by challenging us to set our goals high and plan for success.  It was during this period that God blessed us to attain our 501 ( c ) (3) status which has helped us begin a new era for the workshop.

In 2007, we were blessed to have Pastor William Becton back in our midst under more favorable circumstances and he did not disappoint us.  He was able to stir us up even more by letting us know that we all face challenges, but it is what we do with the challenges that help us move to the next level.  If we are standing still, that means we are not progressing and we may be losing ground.

As we strive to improve what we do at the Gospel Songwriters Music Workshop, sometimes a change or two is necessary.  One important change that occurred this year is that we changed the name of our Luncheon to the Talent showcase Luncheon because we intend to showcase our talented songwriters who want to have a chance to present their material for possible publication.  The guest speaker for this luncheon was non other than Bishop Leonard Scott of Tyscot records.  He brought a new dimension of excitement to our luncheon that made everybody glad they came out.  This was not just about a luncheon, but this was another turning point in the history of the workshop and it gave us an opportunity to introduce our efforts to bring spiritual and natural light to those who are in need.  That challenge is to bring light to those who are in darkness.  This is a two fold purpose:  One way will do this is by bringing the gospel through music to everyone who will hear as we present new songs to the world.  The second way we will bring light is by supporting the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) and Independence for the Blind (IB West) by “Singing for Sight”.  This is our opportunity to give back to those who live in physical darkness, but through research, education and training they can continue to be valued and productive citizens.

Many times when we accept a new challenge we aren’t always sure where we will end up, but one thing is clear, unless you take on the challenge, you will never know what you can achieve.  We never know where we will end up in the future, but we can be sure if we follow God’s leading and direction, we will always end up in the right place.  As we move toward 2009, we believe God will touch hearts as we continue to “Sing for Sight.”  If you would like to know more about our singing for sight campaign, please contact us because the future can only get brighter if we continue to walk in His light and help others to do the same.
